Green skills for engineering manufacturing

From April 2011 the NAC Group will begin delivery of the groundbreaking Level 2 Certificate in ‘Preparation for Working in the Engineering Manufacturing Industry'.
Over the last nine months the NAC Group has been working with EMTA Awards Ltd (EAL) - the leading Awarding Organisation of engineering National and Scottish Vocational Qualifications - to design and develop the new product.
The qualification has been developed in consultation with employers who are keen to bring new entrants into the workforce, and to enhance the skills of the current workforce. It will benefit learners who have little or no previous experience and who may have been unemployed for some time. It will provide them with the skills and attitudes they need for work in manufacturing, especially in emerging ‘green' sectors of the economy. But, equally, it will help to up-skill existing workers to meet the challenges of low carbon manufacturing.
Candidates will develop their understanding of the engineering manufacturing environment, learn about the importance of sustainability and acquire vital hand skills. They will also be taught how to solve work-related problems, and be helped to prepare for job interviews.
It is anticipated that some 7,000 people will benefit from the new Certificate over the next 12 months. The NAC Group aims to become the UK's largest provider of green training over the same period.
Paul Robson, MD of the NAC Group, said "This new product will enable us to play a leading role in driving forward the green agenda, whilst meeting the needs of employers and the aspirations of the unemployed."
